The next leg of the Eagle Valley Trail will kick off this year, but finishing the entire project remains complicated and expensive. Eagle County Commissioner Jeanne McQueeney’s eyebrows raised May 20 when she saw a consent agenda item for a trail-related contract. But that momentary excitement was quickly tempered by the amount of the contract — a relatively modest $870,000 contract with HDR Engineering for construction management and engineering for phase one of a portion of trail construction.

The search is on for the Plains Sharp-Tailed Grouse after reports of the bird near Roxborough State Park. Reddit user happylustig noticed a poster at Roxborough State Park encouraging anyone who sees the rare bird to report it to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). The organization is trying to keep track of the state-endangered bird after receiving reports of sightings in the area. Anyone who sees the bird can take a photo or a video of it and call CPW directly.

A councilman from the Town of Mountain View was removed from his position in a special election on Tuesday after he was accused of shooting a teenager in the face. Brent John Metz, 38, was recalled in a vote of 127-72. Council candidate Ryan Debner will succeed him. Metz pleaded not guilty at the end of April to charges stemming from the September 2024 incident, when he allegedly shot a 17-year-old who Metz accused of trespassing on his Conifer property.

The U.S. Forest Service announced on Monday, May 12, that the first half-mile of the popular Meadow Creek Trail west of Frisco will be closed throughout most of the summer season. The opening section of the trail will be closed while crews complete repairs and maintenance. Seeing over 100,000 visitors annually, the Meadow Creek Trail has seen widespread erosion, trail braiding and other impacts. As a result, many sections of the trail have become difficult to hike.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area will tweak its parking reservation program next season, which will be the ski area’s first full season offering unlimited access to Ikon Pass members and its second season under the ownership of Alterra Mountain Co.A-Basin began implementing a parking reservation system during the 2024-25 winter season, requiring parking reservations on weekends and select holidays in all of the ski area’s main lots through the height of the season.
