1 INTRODUCTION Ecological disturbances, natural or anthropogenic, cause long-lasting changes to vegetation in dryland systems (Allred et al., 2015; Boyd & Davies, 2012) and have been linked to shifts in stable states (Abella et al., 2021). Understanding recovery trajectories following disturbance is necessary for guiding management and conservation of lands that are susceptible to long-term impacts (Chambers et al., 2017).
