The Toronto Blue Jays had an off day on Thursday after completing a 13-day slate that started in New York City on April 4th and ended at home against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. A cancelled game in Baltimore last Friday gave the club some reprieve, but it was a tough slate of games against postseason-worthy opponents, and the club mustered a 6-6 record during the span.

According to Canadian Baseball Network journalist Danny Gallagher, right-handed reliever Zach Pop has found a new home on the West Coast, signing a deal with the Seattle Mariners. Gallagher reports that he has reported to the club’s Arizona complex and will continue to rehab back from an elbow injury he suffered this spring while still with the Jays. 24 teams reportedly reached out to Pop’s camp when he became a free agent after the Jays DFA’d him from the active roster, and he was later released.

Even with the Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) mega-deal, there are still some questions that need to be answered when it comes to this roster, but the franchise at least has a direction for the future: build this team around the slugger. It’s a selling point for current players and free agents as well. Having a focal player to build around gives a type of swagger that allows an organization to bring out ‘their guy’ as a selling point.

Two days later, Lovelady was back on the mound after Max Scherer’s early departure and wound up with the loss, allowing four earned runs to score while walking one batter and hitting two more. He loaded the bases early due to a Ryan O’Hearn double and then hit both Cedric Mullins and Heston Kjerstad, with Gary Sanchez immediately driving in a run on a sac fly to close the gap on the early Blue Jays’ lead.
