On Oct. 5, the eighth annual UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge was held in Aldrich Park, the heart of the campus. The run-ride-walk set new records with 4,200 participants and a remarkable $1.5 million raised to combat cancer by supporting research at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and its pediatric affiliate, Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
‘Fatty cartilage’ discovery set to revolutionize regenerative medicine

Researchers have discovered a new type of tissue, a soft and flexible ‘fatty cartilage’ that could revolutionize the treatment of traumatic injuries, birth defects, and cartilage-damaging diseases like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Along with bone, cartilage is an essential component of our skeletal system. Some of its important functions include providing shape and support to structures such as the ears, nose and windpipe, and acting as a shock absorber in the joints.
Building better futures

Their morning began before the sun had risen. Group members left Irvine at 5 a.m. to journey across the border to Tijuana, Mexico. As they arrived at the designated site, wooden beams, posts and boards were unloaded from the back of their white pickup truck. The UC Irvine students began laying beams along the concrete foundation already in place, eventually creating the framework of a house. With each strike of a hammer, lumber became walls, metal became a roof, and soon the structure was complete.

Fourth-year UC Irvine student Yessica Ornelas believes that directly engaging with a community is the best method for cultivating change. Transport and urban growth in the First Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution led to dramatic economic changes which persist to the present. This paper focuses on urban areas in England and Wales, the birthplace of the First Industrial Revolution, and the role of early transport improvements, like improving rivers and roads, building canals, and reducing sailing costs. We estimate how much inter-urban freight transport costs declined from all such innovations between 1680 and 1830 using a new multi-modal transport model.

Seniors Maddy Salgado and Cameron Collins and junior Sam Goulart come from diverse backgrounds but are united through a love of baking. Anteaters Sprinkling Happiness provides them with a space to feed that passion. Founded in the summer of 2022, Anteaters Sprinkling Happiness began out of a lack of baking-related clubs on UC Irvine’s campus. Salgado aimed to create an organization centered around her hobby, and soon the dream became a reality.

The most intriguing title on Dr. Daniel Chow’s resume probably isn’t neuroradiology chief or co-director of UC Irvine’s Center for Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Medicine. It’s major in the U.S. Army Reserves. Earlier this year, the associate professor-in-residence at the School of Medicine spent several months in Kuwait as a radiologist treating American soldiers.
