A commitment by the federal government to use Canadian steel and aluminum for major national defence and infrastructure projects could be a "turning point" for Canada's economy, the union representing steelworkers said Monday. "The United Steelworkers (USW) welcomes the federal government's decision to require Canadian steel and aluminum in national infrastructure and defense projects," the union's national director Marty Warren said.

Health Canada is recalling two brands of radon detectors over inaccuracies in their readings, the agency said in a notice. Two models of the Life Basis brand radon detectors and one model of InkBird Wifi Radon Detector were recalled on Friday over inaccurate radon detection, which Health Canada said could be a chemical hazard. Radon is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock.

U.S. President Donald Trump's heightened tariffs on steel and aluminum coming into his country will "create mass disruption and negative consequences," Canada's steel industry warns. Trump said on Friday that he will double the tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 per cent. Catherine Cobden, president and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), said the steel industry in Canada and the U.S. were highly integrated and tariffs would hit steel producers on both sides.

The ostrich farm in British Columbia, which has become a flashpoint of an avian flu outbreak, "has not cooperated" with the authorities to manage the outbreak, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Universal Ostrich Farm "failed to undertake appropriate biosecurity risk mitigation measures," the CFIA alleged in a statement. CFIA had previously ordered the entire herd at the farm be culled following an avian flu outbreak in December.
