Introduction In terrestrial ecosystems, carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling affects a wide range of critical ecosystem processes (Elser et al. 2007, LeBauer and Treseder 2008, Du et al. 2020). One important source of nutrients is the decomposition of dead organic matter through physical and chemical breakdown by soil microbes and fauna, which has been extensively studied (Attiwill and Adams 1993, LeBauer and Treseder 2008, Sayer 2006).

Introduction Evidence is mounting that human-caused environmental changes, such as climate (e.g. warming temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns) and disturbance, cause substantial species redistributions in mountain areas (Kowarik 2003, Thuiller et al. 2008, Elmendorf et al. 2012, Pearson et al. 2013, Hedenås et al. 2016). Climate change is four times the global rate in Arctic regions (Rantanen et al. 2022) and is especially pronounced in cold-climate mountain areas (Callaghan et al. 2013).
