Unidirectional and non-unidirectional freeze cast SiOC monoliths were characterized by means of digital image processing. For this purpose a novel method of pore segmentation in complex dendritic pore morphologies was developed. For the first time, the proposed method made it possible to perform an extensive geometrical and structural pore space characterization and analysis on single pore level. The orientation of the primary dendritic channels was obtained from high resolution μCT images.

Interstellar silicate dust is a crucial and ubiquitous component of the interstellar medium (ISM), which regulates the physical and chemical conditions of galaxies. It is a key building block of planetary systems (Draine 2003), including the Martian surface (Bish et al. 2013; Achilles et al. 2017) and Solar system objects like asteroids, comets, and meteorites (Mason 1963; Draine 2003). Dust is formed around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars.
