    My mum dressed me in a nautical outfit for my first proper birthday party with my new found British friends from primary school, aged eleven. She pulled my long thick hair onto a high pony tail, braided it and decorated me with ribbons and clips as if I were some kind of pretty present box. Before this, my birthday parties were really an excuse to have a spread of food and karaoke with her own clan of friends, which celebrated her annual achievements of motherhood.

    My friend Anja and I were on our second year as film students at Central Saint Martins College Of Art, when, over hot lattes and takeaway Singapore fried noodles, we decided to move to New York. We decided that the best education was from the streets of Manhattan? There, we found an apartment in the East Village, we filled it with furniture we found abandoned by the curb side, and lived off New York bagels and cream cheese and spaghetti pomodoro.

    Deeply into the boy band Bros in the late 80s and early 90s, I accumulated a forum of penpals from all over the world. My favourite penpal was from The Seychelles, whose name has slipped my memory but I can picture the Kodak portrait she sent me of her standing by a small shed on a sunny day with white ankle socks, a short floral skirt, a white polo top and tight brown curls tied to both sides of her head. We wrote to each other at least once a week immediately upon receiving letters after school.
