There are many books published each year and even a fast reader cannot read them all during the school year. Over the summer, reading provides an enjoyable family or solo activity that also maintains (and boosts!) language skills. The well-known summer slide, when children lose up to 34% of academic skills, is proven by a number of studies from the 1980s through the early 2000s.
