When not hanging with friends or doing schoolwork, Luke DeBellis and Abigail Gekker rehearse for three to six hours, five to six days a week for high-profile Latin and ballroom dance competitions. That persistence has paid off: In mid-March, Luke, 17, of Somers, and his partner Abby, 15, of Manalapan, NJ, clinched 8th place in the 21-and-under category at the U.S. National Dance Championship in Provo, Utah.

National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, April 12, provides the perfect pretext to celebrate cheese melted between bread and fried up in butter. Ancient Roman cookbooks had recipes to make a cooked bread and cheese sandwich, and many cultures since have created similar takes on this ancient dish. Case in point: the French have the croque monsieur (a grilled ham and cheese sandwich); Mexico has quesadillas; and the Swiss, well, they melt the cheese and toast the bread separately before combining them.

About 400 devotees went to pray at the Durga Temple of Westchester, a new Hindu temple at 1880 Saw Mill River Road in the town of Greenburgh, which held a grand opening celebration Jan. 1. “Greenburgh celebrates our diversity. Hundreds gathered in Chases Park Nov. 12 for the dedication of a public art installation titled “Ohr: A Garden of Light and Strength” (ohr, אור, means “light” in Hebrew). The installation features 240 blue and white orbs along with photographs representing the 240 civilians and soldiers who were taken hostage by Hamas Oct. 7 during the brutal attack on Israel.
