Main textIn 2021, 316 children (0–15 year-old), 107 adolescents (16–19) and 1691 young adults (20–35) in Belgium were diagnosed with a malignant neoplasm (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). The 10-year relative survival was 83% for children (3073 N at risk) and 87% for AYAs (16–35) (17,076 N at risk) diagnosed between 2012 and 2021 [5].

Background Atrial fibrillation occurs in nearly half of geriatric inpatients and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Suboptimal anticoagulation use is an important concern in this population. This study aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of antithrombotic therapies in this patient cohort. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the geriatric wards of a teaching hospital in Belgium, on a background of clinical pharmacy services.

Platelet additive solutions (PASs) were developed in the 1980s to improve storage conditions of platelet concentrates and to lower the risk for allergic and plasma-associated transfusion reactions like ABO hemolytic reactions and transfusion-related acute lung injury [1]. An additional advantage of PASs is the possibility to perform photochemical treatment for the inactivation of bacteria and other pathogens in platelet concentrates. PASs mitigate lesions caused by the photochemical treatment.
