I found bits of it even when it maybe wasn’t there like clouds or shadow. I found it when I wasn’t even looking or didn’twant it, or it found me when least expected, but when I tried to grab, away it squirmed and bit me hard. How confusing, life! I’ve often begged it to let me go. I’ll keep quiet, I say. I won’t say a word. No one will blame you, no one will know. I’ll hide awayfrom it all. Think I care? it says. So in silence I wait, going nowhere.

In college, a guidance counselor regularly lectured our cohort on the importance of being “impactful.” Impactful people are “doers”: they see a problem, need, or inefficiency, and through relentless grit and superior vision, they make change. Impactful people have their elevator pitch down. They have diverse interests and strengths while also being obsessively focused on their goal. They’re on the cutting edge, but they make it look effortless and obvious.

Before the Temple of the Moon, a foundation was laid out on the pattern of a quincunx, a model of the five-pointed compass that defines Teotihuacan cosmology.

New York cardinal Timothy Dolan was straight-faced while telling Fox’s Maria Bartiromo in December that Donald Trump “takes his Christian faith seriously.” This would have been news to anyone who’s paid attention to Trump the past several decades. Bartiromo then opined that Trump’s narrow miss from a would-be assassin’s bullet last summer could only have been “God’s work.” No argument from Dolan.

For as long as humans beings have existed, we have had a knack for forgetting—not only when memory proves difficult, but when it becomes inconvenient. We need only look at Donald Trump’s pardoning of the January 6 “hostages” for the latest, most egregious example. Why do humans long to forget? Why do we hide the truth from ourselves? What is the function of memory in democratic societies?

At this year’s Catholic Media Awards in June 2024, the Jesuit Communications Conference’s AMDG podcast walked home with a number of awards — including an honorable mention in the “Best Podcast — Expression of Faith” category for an interview it hosted with Ellen Koneck, executive director of Commonweal Magazine, the “venerable Catholic journal of opinion” (their words, not ours).

Like President Jimmy Carter, Pacific Palisades recently celebrated its 100th birthday. Founded to be a religious paradise by a dedicated group of churchmen, it succumbed this week to one of the worst urban fires in the history of the United States. In just twenty-four hours, high winds wiped out nearly half of all the homes and razed both the local Catholic and Methodist churches.
