The original Sailor Moon anime adaptation from the 1990s leaned into comedic character moments and zany filler plots. It never shied away from taking time away from the main story arc to indulge in some true silliness. The original anime adds plenty of eye-catching monsters inspired by the theme of the episode and punchy drama. A gimmick doesn't have to be a trick or a waste of time, but it doesn't really add to the character development or further the main story arcs.
