The nurses’ homes near Windhoek Central Hospital are not well. Once a thriving and diverse community of health professionals that included medical interns, doctors, pharmacists, radiologists, and contract specialists, the four buildings are tall, dilapidated, and almost vacant shadows of their former selves. For 45 years after their construction in 1980 they were considered favourable accommodation for the nearby hospital’s staff.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is calling on southern African countries, including Namibia, to expand prostate cancer screening to rural areas for early detection. WHO Africa regional director Matshidiso Moeti says African countries should invest in public health systems capable of addressing the priority health concerns of the population, and of delivering those services nationwide.

The #BeFree Namibia Movement assisted 34 women and girls in Windhoek to receive contraceptive implants in May. The foundation’s director of health and wellness, Veronica Theron, yesterday told The Namibian the turnout to receive the long-acting reversible contraceptive implants and intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs) on 9 May was the highest recorded in the organisation’s history. She said this was an indication that women are interested in their reproductive rights.

Angola has expressed readiness to assist Namibia in building its oil and gas sector, drawing from its own experience in the industry. Presidential spokesperson Alfredo Hengari says Angola’s experience in the oil and gas sector has the capacity to provide adequate training to Namibians. “Angola has built capacity in the oil and gas sector, providing training to Namibians in Angola, and has demonstrably shown readiness to assist Namibia’s nascent oil and gas sector,” he said on Friday.

A Windhoek teacher is being held in custody after he appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on two counts of rape involving a teenage boy on Friday. Rohan Bezuidenhout (27) appeared before magistrate Mutafela Muharukua on two counts of rape after he was arrested on Thursday. The state is alleging that Bezuidenhout raped a boy (13) at a hostel of a high school in the capital, where he was the hostel superintendent, between May and July last year.
