A beloved mural on the side of Belmar “La Gallinita” Meat Market in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood was nearly painted over — until a dedicated team of community muralists and volunteers stepped in to save it. Located at the corner of Harrison and 24th streets, “Leyenda Azteca” is a striking tribute to the tragic Aztec love story of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. In the piece, the warrior Popoca holds the body of princess Izta, who died of a broken heart after believing Popoca died in battle.

Douglas Ramirez’s youngest daughter, Emely, has left the nest, bidding farewell to her dog, her siblings, San Francisco, and most poignantly, her father, as she embarks on a new chapter at Yale University. Douglas, who became a father at eighteen, sacrificed his own educational dreams to provide for his children, always putting their futures ahead of his own. “I only finished high school and well, I started to work at eight years old,” said Douglas.

Estrellita’s Snacks, a new family-owned brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Tenderloin, has come a long way from its origins as a street vending operation on Mission Street. Maria del Carmen Flores, the matriarch behind Estrellita’s Snacks, started in El Salvador, selling pupusas and fruit on the streets with her mother, Rosa Flores Rodriguez. Amid the Salvadoran civil war in the ’80s, Maria moved to Oaxaca, Mexico, where she ran a restaurant focused on Oaxacan cuisine.
