Another year has passed, which means another set of trends have cycled through society. Fashion, media, and music are all key industries that create cultural influence on consumers. As with most trends, those created in 2024 seemed to come and go in spurts. Some were positively impactful, some were not, and some were just another silly addition to 21st century pop culture. Still, each one was incredibly influential in their own way.

Are you a real or fake Christmas tree person? My favourite holiday tradition was my family and I making the trip out to the Christmas tree farm in search of a tree we could decorate with pride. It was cold and we often trekked through the mud, but there was something special about wrapping up warm to walk down the lanes with a hot cocoa in hand. We would always choose a tree that “spoke” to us — even if we barely got it through the door.

Aaron Hyde is a member of the Cascades rowing team. At the Canadian University Rowing Championship in November, Aaron raced the men’s double which placed fourth in the B final and 10th overall for UFV Rowing. ~~What is the best part of rowing?~~ You compete with yourself as much as you compete with the other athletes. I have to constantly [work to] beat my own times to push myself to a point where I can start competing with the people beside me.

The holiday season is what I most look forward to. I enjoy Thanksgiving and Halloween thoroughly when they come around, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to soak it in when the world pushes the next holiday onto us before we can start celebrating the previous one. Stores whip out fake Christmas trees and advent calendars, as Justin Bieber’s Christmas album echoes on every loudspeaker before we can say trick-or-treat. It’s just too much, too fast.

With serious motivation and genuine support from the crowds that piled into the UFV Athletic Centre on Friday, Nov. 8, the Cascade’s men’s basketball team showed consistent determination against the UBC Okanagan Heat. UFV confidently stole the fire from under them, claiming their first win of the 2024-25 season by a score of 80-66, completing the sweep on Saturday to bring their record back to .500, at 2-2.

Fraser Valley hospitals are drowning in a pit of increasing urgency, and it’s not due to patient emergencies. As of this past September, hospitals are reporting a legitimate “crisis” as a result of extreme staff shortages, too many patients, and not enough room for everyone who needs care. Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre and Surrey Memorial Hospital are just a couple of the hospitals impacted by these factors.

With horns blaring and green and white pom-poms shaking in the air, the Cascades’ women’s volleyball team (WVB) proved themselves without fear, recording their first win of the year. Swarms of visiting children from nearby schools filled the stands, the high-spirited energy of the gymnasium echoed with the sounds of kazoos and cheers.

Reflecting on some sports games I’ve attended this semester, I was impressed by the sportsmanship from each team. Being involved in athletics myself for many years in the past, I have found that comradery and feeling like a part of the team is a key element that I always took pride in and appreciated. Having good sportsmanship brings players closer together and allows them to go further in their journey of improvement, competitively or otherwise. This got me thinking: what makes good sportsmanship?
