Starting today, Caltrans will begin a grind and pave operation on the northbound lanes of Highway 101 near Goleta. Crews will work in various locations from Winchester Canyon Road to El Capitan today and tomorrow, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.The operation will also continue next week, Monday through Wednesday. Travelers should expect alternating lane closures with delays no longer than 10 minutes. The project aims to improve pavement conditions for drivers.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department is planning to conduct prescribed pile burns along Paradise road this week. These burns can help prevent the spread of wildfires and reduce impacts to nearby watersheds that can result in soil loss and sedimentation. Around two acres of plant material will be burned, and conditions will be monitored to minimize smoke impacts in Santa Barbara County. Still, it is difficult to predict which areas of the county may be affected.

Santa Barbara Police Department is investigating two separate incidents of assault involving a deadly weapon that happened early Sunday morning. Around 2 a.m., police officers responded to Cottage Hospital for a reported stabbing victim who was brought to the emergency room. The victim had serious injuries and needed emergency surgery.

Goleta Valley Library will close for relocation starting Apr. 1 as it prepares to move to a temporary site. The relocation period will take place throughout April and May. During this time, library staff will be working on readying operations and services to continue off-site. Meanwhile, the 500 N. Fairview facility will undergo construction for 18 to 24 months.

The Paso Robles Police Department arrested a suspect involved in a DUI-related traffic collision that happened Monday. Officers responded to the intersection of State Route 46 and Golden Hill Road in Paso Robles, regarding a crash involving two vehicles. The driver of a 2020 Ford truck was conscious but sustained minor injuries. However, the driver of the 2015 Jeep had fled the scene. 49-year-old Peter Terence Wells was eventually located, hiding in the parking lot of Eagle Energy Gas Station.

The City of Santa Barbara is taking proactive measures ahead of the stormy forecast, opening both sandbag stations and activating emergency storm parking. Self-serve sandbag stations are open Wednesday at the following locations at Annex Yard (401 East Yanonali St.) and City Fire Station 7 (2411 Stanwood Dr.). Residents can stop by any time from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and can take up to 20 bags per visit. Free emergency storm parking has also been activated for residents in flood-prone areas.

The City of Arroyo Grande has been awarded grant funding that officials say will be used to make local streets safer. A total of $340,560 from the Highway Safety Improvement Program will go toward enhancing pedestrian safety and improving local infrastructure. Funds will support improvements like new crosswalks, filling in sidewalk gaps and repairing drainage issues. Crosswalks will also see features like curb extensions, flashing lights and additional signs on East Branch Street and Huasna Road.
