Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced on April 18, a controversial proposal to increase the budget of the L.A. Police Department and hire hundreds of new officers, as announced in the mayor’s first city budget in City Hall. The proposed budget would increase the LAPD’s budget by almost 119 million, a 6.3% increase from last year’s budget. “I believe that living in a safe neighborhood is the right of every Angeleno,” Bass said in her budget proposal.

USC Student Health officially announced today that COVID-19 vaccines will no longer be a requirement for students as of May 19, amongst other COVID-19 updates that signal the end of the pandemic. Students were previously notified of the expected removal of the university’s vaccine mandate when Chief Student Health Officer Dr. Sarah Van Orman made a statement in a briefing with the Daily Trojan last month.

A lot has changed since President Carol Folt delivered her 2022 State of the University address, almost a year ago. With the 2023 address recently taking place, we took a look back at what was discussed and the goals set in the 2022 address to see how USC compares today. Folt spent much of the beginning of her 2022 speech praising the university for the work that was done to better support and represent minorities at USC, coming in the form of two separate initiatives.

In honor of International Women’s Day tomorrow, Shamsia Hassani, Afghanistan’s first female graffiti artist, will create a large-scale art piece and interact with students at Alumni Park in an event facilitated by Visions and Voices. The event is one of a three part series titled “Birds of No Nation,” which seeks to highlight the use of art and creative expression to address the issues women are facing around the world.

Ever since the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) first took place in 1995, actors opened the show by sharing the origin stories of their careers and the fond memories they’ve made along the way, a tradition that has lived on as “I am an actor.”In recognition of the 2023 SAG Awards on Feb. 26, Annenberg Media asked a few SDA students majoring in theatre with an acting emphasis to share their origin stories.

Campus food can get old, especially when we remember the cultural hub of Los Angeles that USC resides in. With this, comes a city teeming with food and restaurants from all different cultures. So, we asked USC students to share some of their favorite spots to eat off campus and why. For some people it wasn’t so much whether they were close, but that they had the right atmosphere. Lindsay Huerta, a junior studying social science, loves Cafe MAK, a small cafe in Koreatown.
