I still remember our last meeting vividly. It was in September 2016, at the eighth International Hrant Dink Award ceremony in Istanbul. I arrived there by chance, as I was briefly in Istanbul on my way to Antep (officially Gaziantep, though its ‘victory’ came at the cost of my people’s existence).

It was a calm afternoon in that summer of 1982 when an explosion suddenly shook my apartment. I heard from neighbours who had come out to their balconies that a building was destroyed in an airstrike, near the Sanayeh gardens, a few hundred meters from our street. As a curious adolescent at the time, I went to see the site of the strike, only to find that the roof of what had once been a ten-story building had collapsed to the ground and was now resting on a heap of debris.

We grew up in war-torn Lebanon, embedded in a bubble of Armenian language, school, and culture. We immigrated to the West (the United States and Switzerland), built careers as a scientist and a lecturer/columnist, and managed to stay in touch. The last time we saw each other was last summer in Armenia.
