One man killed, one crtically injured in Lake Charles U-turn crash

A 25-year-old Lake Charles man was killed after driving into the path of another vehicle shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, according to Louisiana State Police Troop D. The a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 14 near Linkswiller Road claimed the life of Jacob Hummel, State Police said. The preliminary investigation revealed that Hummel was driving a 2021 Ram Pickup south on LA 14 and a 2003 Jeep Wrangler was also traveling south on that highway.

Early voting for the May 3 election ends Saturday, with voting hours each day from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.The deadline to request an absentee ballot is April 29 by 4:30 p.m., other than military and overseas voters. You can request an absentee ballot online through the Louisiana Secretary of State online site at https://voterportal.sos.la.gov/ or through your Registrar of Voters Office.

A man with an extensive criminal history that includes a homicide and kidnapping has been arrested in the April 1 shooting death of James Williams, Baton Rouge Police report. BRPD homicide detectives arrested Daniel Westley, 39, in the fatal shooting in the 10,000 block of Avenue E. Westley was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of first-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon, police said Sunday.

Baton Rouge Police homicide detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning. At 3:04 a.m., BRPD uniformed officers responded to a dispatched call reporting a disturbance involving an armed male suspect at the Super 6 Inns and Suites at 9901 Gwenadele Ave. There, officers encountered a 34-year old man in the parking lot. An exchange of gunfire ensued between the man and officers.
Port Allen woman dies in three-vehicle crash in East Baton Rouge

A 42-year-old Port Allen woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash shortly before noon Monday in Greenwell Springs. The crash on La. 37 near Sandy Creek Community Road in East Baton Rouge Parish claimed the life of Chiquita Rogers, according to State Police. The preliminary investigation revealed that Rogers was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt northbound on La. 37 and stopped to make a left turn.

Baton Rouge Police homicide detectives are investigating a fatal shooting after being called to the scene in the 6500 block of Blackberry Street at 11:17 p.m. Saturday. Karvell St. Cyr, 22, was found deceased on scene from gunshot wounds, police said. This is an ongoing investigation. The motive and suspect(s) are unknown at this time. A juvenile male has been booked after surrendering to police in the fatal shooting Sunday morning of 48-year-old Latasha Thomas. Baton Rouge Police responded to the shooting in the 3700 block of Plank Road at 11:28 a.m. Sunday. Thomas was found deceased from gunshot wounds, police said. During the investigation, the juvenile suspect went to 1st District with his mother and turned himself in.
State Police investigating deputy-involved shooting in Hammond

Louisiana State Police, at the request of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a deputy-involved fatal shooting. One person died in the shooting shortly before midnight Saturday on South Baptist Road on Saturday near US 190 in Hammond, according to an LSP news release. No deputies were harmed during the incident, State Police said. The agency did not provide further information Sunday morning.
