I Want My 80’s Tour is Totally Rad in Clearwater

Musician and actor Rick Springfield kicked off his “I Want My 80’s” tour at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater for a Wednesday “hump day” show! He brought along some of his 80’s comrades to bring back the memories of those glorious MTV days to a live music show. For this show, John Cafferty, Wang Chung, John Waite and Rick brought us 80’s hits and more. John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band opened the show and brought his hits along.
Cheap Trick Brings the Party to the Mahaffey Theater

The Mahaffey Theater is celebrating 60 years in St. Petersburg and they kicked it off with a birthday party and the best freakin’ American rock band around, Cheap Trick! Opening the doors early with a party room decorated in Trick checkerboard and memorabilia along with a DJ and photo booth for the concert ticket holders. There was a raffle for front row seats and lots of dancing to 80’s rock, that included Bon Jovi, Guns & Roses and of course Cheap Trick.

The Florida Orchestra gave the Tampa Bay area a huge gift in bringing the mega-talented Cynthia Erivo to a SOLD-OUT St. Pete show to kick-off her series of tour dates across the U.S. over the summer months. Erivo is extremely busy; her new album, “I Forgive You” drops on June 6 and she is hosting the Tony Awards on June 8th.

In downtown St. Pete, at the Mahaffey Theatre, baby boomers were out in full force to hear the tunes of the great Burt Bacharach. Musician Todd Rundgren and a cast of stunning singers paid tribute to one of the greatest popular music songbooks of our time. The versatility of Rundgren over his nearly 60-year career is unmatched by anyone I can think of.
Spring Concerts Bringing A Variety of Artists to Tampa Bay

Looks like musicians and artists are ready to get out of the winter freeze and bring their talents to the Suncoast and Tampa Bay areas. Starting with Sarasota at Van Wezel Performing Arts Center, the week of March 10th has the rock & blues of ZZ Top on March 13th and the comedy of Jay Leno & Arsenio Hall on March 14th. Broadway’s traveling tour of “Moulin Rouge” will be in the SRQ the week of March 18th thru March 23rd.

Famous trumpet player Chris Botti came to Florida over Valentine’s weekend to bring some romantic music to the Tampa Bay area. Chris and his four-piece band mixed it up with jazz and pop tunes along with a several special guests that we will talk about later. Of course with it being Valentine’s weekend, there were many couples in the audience, jazz enthusiasts and longtime fans. Mr. Botti appeared onstage in black with a while jacket and his Martin Committee handcraft trumpet.
Patti Smith Celebrates Beatle George Harrison at Sarasota’s Selby Gardens

The new exhibition at Selby Gardens is George Harrison: A Gardner’s Life as part of the Jean & Alfred Goldstein Exhibition Series. It is on view from now until June 29th at the downtown Sarasota campus. For those who didn’t know, George loved music but he also loved gardening and spent much of his time after the Beatles disbanded toiling in the earth.

The great rock voice from Canada, Burton Cummings, played Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall on Friday night! The lead vocalist of The Guess Who in the 60’s and 70’s, Cummings & company brought us some of the biggest hits of the era including “American Woman” and “These Eyes”. Burton is revered with every music award given and is one of the most distinguished musicians in Canada.

May Pang, former girlfriend of musician John Lennon came to Tampa over the Gasparilla Pirate Festival weekend. May brought her candid photos of John taken over their 18th month relationship during the famous Lennon “Lost Weekend” period. The exhibition was showing at Tempus Projects Gallery in the heart of Ybor City.
