A wave of mysterious fires has hit sugarcane farmlands, including the nucleus estates of Muhoroni and Miwani factories, destroying over 150 hectares in just a month. The latest incident, which occurred on Wednesday, saw another 20 acres of mature cane razed, adding to the growing crisis. The joint receiver-manager for Muhoroni and Miwani factories, Harun Kirui, said the company had suffered losses exceeding Sh80 million due to the arson that started early February this year.

County executives and assemblies have raked up more than Sh21 billion in suspicious legal fees, mainly paid to private lawyers and law firms, a new audit has revealed, with Nairobi accounting for the bulk of the expenses. The report by Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu said most of the costs arose from court cases related to unpaid contractor claims, wrongful sacking and irregular purchase practices.

The average price of a kilogramme of sugar jumped to Sh166.45 in February 2025, marking a Sh5.11 rise compared to January, partly fuelled by demand pressure due to factory closures, shelved imports and factory shutdowns for routine maintenance. Data by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that sugar prices jumped 3.16 percent between January and February. A kilo of sugar sold at an average of Sh161.34 in January.
