The price of chocolate has risen by 16.5% in a year, outpacing an overall 4.4% increase in the cost of supermarket food and drink, the consumer group says. Meanwhile, several treats have been affected by "shrinkflation" - when products get smaller but the price does not.

Australian zookeepers are travelling to South-East Asia to assist with rescued sun and moon bears. More than 30 bears have been rescued in 2024 so far. The volunteers from Sydney are already planning their return in the new year. Tamara Gillies remembers the first rescued cub she ever worked with. It was a sun bear in a Cambodian restaurant being held in a small cage and "destined for bear paw soup".

The NSW RSPCA says there is a year-long wait list for people wanting to surrender their pets. A third of animals are being surrendered due to financial stress. Animal rescue organisations are warning the problem will get worse over summer. Pet rescue organisations across Sydney are turning away animals that owners say they can no longer afford to keep as shelters hit capacity. The RSPCA NSW has a waiting list of 12 months or longer for people wanting to surrender their pet.
