A federal judge issued a temporary ruling Tuesday ordering the Department of Homeland Security to reinstate the legal status of two international students at Montana State University who had their visas suddenly revoked last week. Without proper status, international students can face deportation or arrest. But United States District Court Judge Dana Christensen also barred the federal government from initiating deportation proceedings for the two students on the basis of their revoked visas.

A graduate student at Montana State University was set to defend her final research paper in four days and graduate from her master's program in early May. Now she’s suing the federal government to allow her to complete the final days of her studies. This student is one of two graduate students at MSU who filed a lawsuit Monday after they had their F-1 student visas revoked by the federal government last week.

Three international students at Montana State University and another at the University of Montana had their visas revoked by the Department of Homeland Security, university officials said on Friday. "We have learned that three of our international students attending Montana State University have had their F-1 student visa status revoked, under the authority of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security," MSU President Waded Cruzado wrote in a campus-wide email.
