With only a little more than a week to spare until the start of a new fiscal year, Gov. Greg Gianforte on Friday signed off on the state’s primary $16.5 billion two-year budget bill, advancing all but $31 million worth of the spending priorities tucked into it by the 2025 Legislature. House Bill 2 is the state's main spending measure. It funds government operations, chiefly agencies and their programs, through a mix of federal and state dollars.

Following failed votes at the legislative session and a series of decisions Friday by Gov. Greg Gianforte, Montana families struggling to access child care are unlikely to see relief in the near future. Gianforte, a second-term Republican, vetoed House Bill 456 on Friday, a measure that would have extended an existing child care subsidy program to parents who work in the industry.

A group of Montana political leaders on Wednesday launched what’s being called a “first-in-the-nation” ballot initiative campaign to keep corporate and secret donor money out of the state's political campaigns by using a “breakthrough” legal strategy, but outside experts are skeptical. Gov. Greg Gianforte on Monday appointed Rep. Marta Bertoglio, a Clancy Republican, to head the Department of Commerce, making her the latest of a handful of former and current legislators that Gianforte picked to head state agencies. Bertoglio, a Deer Lodge native and Air Force veteran, was first elected to the Legislature in 2020.
