These survivors, hibakusha in Japanese, have dedicated their lives to ridding the world of nuclear weapons. But to many Americans, the atomic bombs dropped on Japan are still a hazy part of history. One of the reasons for this is time; it has been nearly 80 years since the war ended. But another reason is education.

    When "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" premiered on the same weekend, fans coined the term "Barbenheimer," creating memes that combined Barbie images with images of the atomic bomb. In one, Margot Robbie, who played Barbie, sat on the shoulders of Cillian Murphy, who played Oppenheimer, as she appeared to cheer in front of an explosion. In another, the two characters watched a Barbie-pink mushroom cloud rise over a desert landscape.

    “Oppenheimer” is a front-runner for best picture Sunday at the Academy Awards, earning 13 nominations. The movie is a masterpiece, from Cillian Murphy’s acting to its hauntingly beautiful score. But while it explores the ethics of building the atomic bomb, it glosses over the aftermath of the bombings. The second atomic bomb exploded over Nagasaki at 11:02 a.m. on Aug. 9, 1945. U.S. occupation troops arrived in the city about 45 days after that. My grandfather, Carmine Gerardi, was one of them.
