    VICTORIA KINGHAMThere are a fair number of books in print about nursery rhyme; mostly collections with commentary, occasionally delving into the background and origins of this unfortunately diminishing genre. Old classics have been replaced by cutes-y commercial children’s songs or songs from animated films like Frozen (remember the universal popularity of Let It Go ten years or so ago?) or moronically insistent earworms like Baby Shark.

    Review The Discreet Charm of the Disturbingly Brilliant – Empirical at Jazz Hastings Victoria Kingham Coruscating is perhaps an overused word in the context of jazz writing, but it’s easy to see why. It’s rhythmic, internally balanced, sibilant – an onomatopoeic description of music that’s difficult to pin down, but driving, exciting, unexpected. Empirical’s music has rightly been called ‘sophisticated’.

    VICTORIA KINGHAM at the Stables Gallery As far as one can tell, Agatha Christie never lived here. Among other exotic locations, she lived variously in Devon, Oxfordshire, Cheshire, Egypt, and the Canary Islands, and famously once disappeared and was discovered two weeks later at a spa in Harrogate – a ‘mystery’ unsolved to this day. If Hastings was not her chosen residence,  she immortalised the name.

I expected condensed, pointed fiction but instead was surprised with two dozen often painfully honest recollections, about (or by) fathers and mothers. This is a collaborative project, in which the editor and writer Steven Short brings together the experiences of ‘new and emerging writers’.

    VICTORIA KINGHAMThe Director of Hastings Contemporary is leaving to take up the post of Chief Executive Officer at The Sherborne in Dorset. Liz Gilmore was the founding Director of what was, fourteen years ago, the Jerwood Gallery. It later became Hastings Contemporary, an independent, self-governing charity, and she  has played a key role in its development, her careful curation emphasising the talents of the underrepresented in general and women in particular.
