Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect more than 1 billion people. COP28 pledged to help eradicate 20 NTDs, which include leprosy, rabies, trachoma, dengue and chikungunya, with health set to have a more central role at COP29. The climate crisis is expected to trigger a “catastrophic rise” in public health issues including infectious diseases, according to a World Economic Forum report. Twenty-one tropical diseases cause suffering to over one billion people globally.

Guinness helped fuel an 18% rise in beer sales (Image: Diageo) Guinness sales were a bright spot for drinks group Diageo as it reported lower-than-expected annual sales and profits in a “challenging year.” The company, which employs around 3,000 people in Scotland and produces brands including Smirnoff, Baileys, Johnnie Walker and Talisker, said consumers were more cautious – but that it was confident of returning to growth.
