Although María Herrón is a native New Yorker, she understands what it feels like not to belong in this tough city. The daughter of a single mother who emigrated from Cuba in the 1960s, Herrón grew up in a “relatively white neighborhood,” just north of the Bronx, where her mother ran a food shop. “I got into a lot of trouble as a kid just for saying coño—and I didn’t understand why,” Herrón, the founder of Mil Mundos, a bilingual bookstore in Bushwick, recalls.

“I feel like I have a toxic relationship with New York,” my friend stated during our brunch. I asked her why, but deep down I already knew the answer. I felt the same way. It was a sunny Saturday morning, and we had bagels at Leo’s, in Williamsburg. We moved to the city together, almost at the same time last year. Also, we came together the first time we visited New York.

Liliana Cabrera arrived at the Ezeiza penitentiary complex in Greater Buenos Aires in 2006. At 26 years old, she had been convicted of crime against private property (i.e. theft) and sentenced to eight years in prison. A few weeks into her sentence, the older women in the prison organized a hunger strike. They demanded that inmates with children under five years old be granted the possibility of house arrest. Immediately, Cabrera joined the strike.

After talking to many Latin American migrants living in New York, I realized one of their main problems was navigating the healthcare system and accessing mental health support, a worrying issue that grows among immigrant communities in the US. Migration is part of the US culture, and the influx of migrants arriving in the United States is not unusual: Between 2010 and 2020, the overall Latinx population in New York City grew by 154 thousand people to 2.4 million.
