PEMBROKE 一 Purnell Swett High School experienced a gas leak during a construction project. A construction worker hit a gas line while working in the school. All staff were evacuated, and all activities, including athletic events, were canceled. The football preseason scrimmage that was scheduled to be played Thursday evening at Red Springs was also canceled, as the players were unable to access campus and retrieve their gear. FAIRMONT — The Board of Commissioners made headway Tuesday on waswte services. AwardsAfter an invocation, Mayor Charles Kemp began the meeting by recognizing three individuals for their efforts in organizing and running Fairmont’s senior bingo nights. The recognized individuals are Linda Bethea, Phelecia Lewis and Pam Smith. Each was given a certificate of recognition. The Robeson County Library asnd the Public Schools of Robeson County are both promoting summer reading initiatives. ❮❯LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Libraries has launched a summer reading program for all ages. The summer reading program is put on by the Collaborative Library Summer Program (CLSP), and most libraries across the nation participate to encourage their communities to read more. Since the CLSP began hosting the program in 1987, each year has had a new theme.

PEMBROKE — The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is hosting a Veteran’s Stand Down on June 15. The Stand Down is an annual event that gathers various vendors, such as veteran services, social organizations, employers and businesses. The Blue Cross will provide meals. Gary Jacobs from Veteran Services said that some of the available services will be disability claims and appeals with the Veterans Affairs (VA), and Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) will assist with housing claims.

FAIRMONT—The town’s Board of Commissioners held a budget workshop for the upcoming fiscal year on June 4. Town Manager Jerome Chestnut presented the proposed 2024-2025 fiscal year budget, the total of which is $4,505,873, split across three permanent funds used to develop and invest in the town. Town commissioners were able to ask questions and make requests for items to be addressed in the next workshop on June 11. Water/Sewer FundNo rate increase has been proposed this year.
