In 2020, when Apple released the first Apple Silicon computer, the M1 Macbook Air, it upended the personal computing industry in fundamental ways. Apple’s chips were not only powerful but provided unprecedented efficiency. Suddenly, laptops could easily have 12-15 hours of battery life. This meant that just like your phone, you could charge your laptop overnight and then not plug it in during the work day. Windows laptops still labouring with Intel or AMD chipsets simply couldn’t compete.

Over the next few pages, we witness a wedding ceremony unfold in stunning detail — image after image following the nuptial procession through multiple venues and various rituals, and a teeming crowd of onlookers. I wouldn’t blame you for thinking I was describing the Ambani wedding. But my reference is a bit older. Over 100 years old, in fact.

I have a confession to make. I almost bought Google’s latest ‘mid-range’ phone, the Pixel 8a. As soon as it was announced, I realised that it came with a generous exchange price for my current phone, the Pixel 7. The prospect of upgrading to a 120hz screen, a smaller form factor, and seven years of updates was a bit tempting – even though my Pixel 7 is hardly old and works perfectly.

They are all so beautifully built, extravagantly specced, and carefully designed that you don’t really expect them to have any major flaws or quirks to set them apart from their competition.

2023 is a hard year to summarise when it comes to consumer technology. If I had to pick one thing – this was the year of AI, for good reasons and bad. AI is now so ubiquitous that it might feel like it was always around, but 2023 claims the honour of being the first year that AI was literally everywhere. But that doesn’t mean there weren't a bunch of other interesting things going on in the world of gadgets and the internet.

There are arguments aplenty and adherents of both camps can be equally passionate about why one is better than the other. But there’s another very fundamental division that doesn’t get talked about much, and that’s between American phones like the iPhones and the Pixels, and Chinese phones like those from Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo (Samsung sits somewhere in the middle).
