1 INTRODUCTION: TREHALOSE METABOLISM AND ITS REGULATORY ROLE The trehalose metabolic pathway plays a key role in plant growth and development, acting as a central regulator of carbon and nitrogen metabolism as well as source-sink interactions (Baena-González & Lunn, 2020; Fichtner & Lunn, 2021; Figueroa & Lunn, 2016; Figueroa et al., 2016; Paul et al., 2020).
