1 Introduction The consumption of dead animal matter (scavenging) is widespread among vertebrates and facilitates the flow of energy and nutrients across trophic levels (Wilson and Wolkovich 2011; Inger et al. 2016). By consuming dead animals, scavengers support essential ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycling and may prevent the spread of diseases associated with decaying matter (DeVault, Rhodes Olin, and Shivik 2003; O'Bryan et al. 2018).
