Van Buren County Fair organizers busy getting things ready for this week’s activities, a year-long process to get things ready. Fair Organizer Lesa Bouldin said this year’s theme is “Jam Packed with Fun.” Among the events, the fair welcomes a new event this year, the AG Olympics. Bouldin said the competition is three separate categories. “It’s pretty simple things,” Bouldin said. “We’re going to have a relay, a farmhand relay. It’ll involve a wheelbarrow and a couple of people.

Fentress Volunteer Fire Department has put together a memorial walk and speaker event to commemorate lives lost at the World Trade Center September 11, 2001. Fentress Firefighter Tyler Arms said the fire department just wanted to assemble the community and remember that tragic day. Arms said there are young people of voting age too young to remember that day. Arms said guest speaker and retired firefighter Lt. Joe Torillo was at ground zero and survived the tower collapse.

Scouting District Chairman said Upper Cumberland Scouting enrollments have returned to pre-COVID levels. District Chairman Bob Mackie said the youth development program lost membership during the COVID years but all the activities started back 18 months ago and all in-person activities have returned. Mackie said despite the competition of other outside interests, the Scouts are thriving. He said that includes an increase in girls since the organization opened to girls in 2019.

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce will provide information on community resources and an opportunity to meet local officials at a new event called Community Coffee. Chamber Executive Hope Vargas said she had received feedback that gaining information and meeting other residents was sometimes difficult for people. Vargas said the Chamber members felt they could bridge the gap for the community.
