Los Angeles’ endless greater metro area sprawl of nearly 13 million people equals one of the most diverse cities in the world. Partly growing up here, both in my elementary years and ages 18-23, LA has a very special place in my heart and my roots… and its recent, tragic fires broke my heart. This won’t be a one-off article, like dear countries I realistically won’t be able to visit often in a lifetime (think my recent Ecuador guide).

These newcomers or new menus cover the gamut, including modern Afghani food, a Korean steakhouse, Honduran-Yucatecan and Cambodian eateries. Alongside my latest restaurant reviews — Atelier Crenn, Californios, Merchant Roots, Harbor House Inn, Eylan, Amara Belmont, ALPINA at Terra in Eataly Silicon Valley, Che Fico Menlo Park, Meyhouse Palo Alto— these seven spots are also worth visiting, with last month’s standouts here.

Let's be honest, despite over 15 years of hearing about picturesque, UNESCO World Heritage city San Miguel de Allende, I wasn't particularly interested in visiting. I knew it was a huge expat and retiree favorite, so I imagined the worst aspects of Puerto Vallarta but chichi: a town overrun with tourists, masking the character and Mexican people I love so across Mexico.

Italian food made with Mexican soul is what Sotto is going for and does well in a lofty space lined with records, vintage speakers and amps in Mexico's dreamy town of San Miguel de Allende... My travel guide to the city: https://t.co/wQczNMTkON https://t.co/dFzqKSuvj9

Of course I love paella (& brand new Macarena #PaloAlto has 5 paella variations). But I have a soft spot for a good fideuà, a traditional seafood “noodle.” Macarena's seafood version hit the spot. Ins-&-outs explored in my Peninsula/Silicon Valley guide: https://t.co/sNaNyowxji https://t.co/njkltOA9b3

I’ve been writing about @redbirdla in DTLA for over a decade, a winner for its striking retractable roof space, chef Neal Fraser & Amy Knoll’s inspired food & Tobin Shea’s superb cocktails. Here's why Shea+team still make some of the best cocktails in LA: https://t.co/LqFT5Z7rMr https://t.co/FcNUimIE0j
