Magnesium (Mg), the eighth most abundant element in Earth’s crust, is attractive for energy conversion, (1,2) energy storage, (3−5) and chemical synthesis. (6,7) In recent years, Mg nanoparticles have drawn growing attention as an alternative to established plasmonic metals, such as gold, silver, and copper.

Seed-mediated synthesis of monodisperse plasmonic magnesium nanoparticles† Vladimir Lomonosov,‡ab Elizabeth R. Hopper‡abc and Emilie Ringe *ab Abstract We reduce di-n-butylmagnesium with arene (naphthalene, biphenyl, phenanthrene) radical anions and dianions to obtain metallic, plasmonic Mg nanoparticles. Their size and shape depends on the dianion concentration and reduction potential.
