This editorial refers to ‘Intravenous iron therapy results in rapid and sustained rise in myocardial iron content through a novel pathway’, by M. Vera-Aviles et al., https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehae359. Unlike gastroenterologists or nephrologists, cardiologists have traditionally not been very interested in iron metabolism. However, over the past two decades, iron deficiency has been extensively studied in heart failure (HF), sparking a long-lasting debate in the cardiological community.
