‘Where the Bones Lie’ and the Engine of California NoirI first arrived in Los Angeles on a magazine assignment. A firefighting plane had almost crashed while extinguishing a wildfire in the nearby hills, prompting a massive investigation, and my editor wanted me to write a story about the brave pilots who regularly risked their lives to fight infernos from the air.
