Size matters in host–guest chemistry. In the early days, crown ethers and macrocyclic hosts recognized metal ions and small molecules in their cavities. (1) However, because of the size limitation (typically, <200 Å3 cavity volume), guest recognition by these synthetic hosts was restricted to mostly a single small molecule displaying no unique properties that might appear by multimolecular guest recognition.
