When I was eight years old, I visited my favourite barber Boni’s shop at least once a month. This was the only way I could get the latest issue of Supa Strikaz. Back then, when you could get a clean shave for 20twenty bob and the blue notes were still in circulation (xxx), Boni would buy the Sunday Nationnewspaper, pull out the comic, and give it to me for free when I arrived. For a long time, he was my hero.

In the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Pete Larson (of the Dr. Pete Larson and his Cytotoxic Nyatiti Band), an epidemiologist, nyatiti player, and founder of Dagoretti Records, approached the late Grandmaster Masese (real name Dennis Dancan Mosiere) about doing a project on the Obokanomusic of the Kisii people from the Nyanza region of Western Kenya. One of the best depictions of Muslim women I’ve come across in the media is the show “We Are Lady Parts” by Nida Manzoor. So, after a friend recommended that I watch the movie “Polite Society” which was written and directed by Manzoor as well, I was sure I’d love it right away. If there ever was a film that was truly a labour of love it would be “Loving Vincent”. A biographical drama about the life and death of the person considered to be the father of modern art, Vincent Van Gogh. To put this into perspective, the film is an experimental adult animation with each of the 65,000 frames being an actual oil on canvas painting in the very distinct Van Gogh style. These paintings were done by a total of 125 painters from over 20 countries.

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression on 17 January 2020. The first two drugs I got on were olanzapine (an antipsychotic) and mirtazapine (an antidepressant). Initially, I was very disciplined with my adherence but eventually I got less and less consistent around the third month. In March 2020, the world shut down due to the Covid 19 pandemic and I couldn’t get the medication I needed. And so all I did was struggle to be human in a time where everything reminded me that I had to be.
