When I was 23 years old, I was very tangentially involved as a volunteer in a 2013-14 grassroots campaign in Philadelphia to stop police from automatically transferring undocumented immigrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under a program known as 287(g). During Obama’s presidency, local organizers saw a stark disconnect between Washington’s lofty promises of comprehensive immigration reform and the urgent need to dismantle the machinery of mass deportation.
