Wes Moore claims he called for the resignation of Vincent Schiraldi, Maryland’s secretary of juvenile services. “I called for his resignation, and I’m happy about the direction DJS — under the leadership of Betsy — will be going forward,” Moore said during an appearance on WYPR’s Midday Tuesday, one day after the resignation became public. The governor added that Betsy Fox Tolentino will become acting secretary on Wednesday and hopes the Senate will confirm her as the permanent replacement.

Clean-up efforts will resume Friday morning after crews paused late Thursday following a diesel spill into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. City and state officials said that 18,000 gallons of oil and water had been sucked out of the waterway 26 hours after the spill. Fire Chief James Wallace praised the crew’s efforts, noting remarkable strides had been made in a short amount of time. “Last night, it was worse,” Wallace said. “[The water] was like wine. The Baltimore Vacants Reinvestment Council has a big puzzle to solve. With 17 members, the council meets monthly to determine how to address the city’s vacancy problem through a whole-block approach. This strategy focuses on stabilizing entire blocks rather than tackling vacant properties on a case-by-case basis. The BVRC’s goal is to reduce Baltimore’s vacant housing stock by 5,000 units over the next five years.

As in-person early voting got underway Thursday in Maryland, a nation divided in the presidential race was on display at a voting center in Perry Hall in Baltimore County. People lined up early to cast their ballots at the community center at Honeygo Run Regional Park, and they were a clear mix of voters. According to the Institute for Immigration Research (IIR), African immigrants represent 17% of the state’s immigrant population. Often overlooked, this community of about 900,000 people has begun organizing and demanding more political representation. Maryland’s Public Service Commission will hold a hearing Tuesday, to review lessons learned from Baltimore Gas and Electric’s (BGE) 2021-2023 multi-year rate plan.
