THE HAGUE, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of flu cases in the Netherlands has been rising rapidly, prompting the Netherlands Institute for Health Services (Nivel) to officially declare the start of a flu epidemic on Wednesday. A flu epidemic is officially recognized when at least 53 out of 100,000 people report flu symptoms to their doctor for two consecutive weeks. Last week, 76 out of 100,000 people in the Netherlands reported flu symptoms, up from 58 the week before.

THE HAGUE, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- For the fourth consecutive day, dozens of flights were cancelled at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport on Saturday as dense fog continued to disrupt travel across the Netherlands. About 50 flights scheduled to for Saturday were canceled, adding to a week of significant disruptions. Similar conditions on Thursday and Friday caused dozens of canceled flights while Wednesday saw over 100 cancellations due to the persistent fog.

THE HAGUE, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Over 700 climate activists were arrested on Saturday during a demonstration on a motorway near The Hague as they blocked the road and refused to leave, Dutch police reported. Among those detained, 12 individuals faced charges for criminal offenses such as sedition and assault and were taken to police stations. The remaining protesters were transported out of the city by bus and released later in the day.

THE HAGUE, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch government announced on Friday a plan to reduce the number of flights at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, one of the world's busiest international hubs, in an effort to combat noise pollution affecting nearby communities. Starting next year, the airport will be limited to 478,000 take-offs and landings annually -- a 4.4-percent decrease from the current cap of 500,000.
