Stephen Reicher considers the assumptions and assertions being made in relation to this summer’s far right violence and disorder. Amid a spreading wave of rioting there is a clamour to provide answers. What is happening? Why is it happening? What does it tell us about our society? How do we deal with it? This piece will not attempt to offer simple explanations. However, we can point to issues with the responses that have been provided so far.
