In picking this Lions team, I have done so on the basis that it is for a Test match to be played against Australia next Saturday. If it were for a Test in July some currently injured players would come into contention, such as Scotland centre Sione Tuipulotu, and someone like Tadhg Furlong, who only made his first appearance off the bench against Italy on Saturday after struggling with a calf injury.

The 61-year-old was in charge of the national team between 2007 and 2019, before returning to the post in 2022. He is Wales's longest-serving head coach and arguably the most successful in the Welsh Rugby Union's (WRU) history, with a gate at Cardiff's Principality Stadium renamed "Gatland's Gate" in honour of him in 2019. Pressure had been growing on Gatland after Wales suffered a record string of defeats - 14 losses in a row. The team had a disappointing autumn international series, including losing to Fiji at home for the first time. The team were also awarded the wooden spoon in last year's Six Nations championship for the first time since 2003, and are yet to win a game at this year's tournament.

The art of substitution is a complex one and...

Warren Gatland: Andy Farrell should not be afraid of picking his son Owen for LionsAndy Farrell will have a big decision to make regarding Owen Farrell. I don’t envy Lions head coach Andy Farrell when it comes to the selection dilemma he could face over whether or not to pick his son, Owen, for the tour of Australia. I have a better understanding than most about the complexity of such a scenario, given that my son, Bryn, plays professional rugby.
