MADEIRA BEACH — Residents packed City Hall on June 11 to fight a hotel’s request to sell alcohol, but they lost. The commission approved the Barefoot Beach Club’s permit, 3-2. The hotel at 13220 Gulf Blvd., sits among homes, condos and other hotels. Neighbors call the area “Old Florida” and worry that letting the hotel sell booze will bring noise and trouble to their quiet street. Hotel guests can already buy alcohol elsewhere and drink it in their rooms or by the pool.

Neither finalist candidate had experience as a city clerk, but both were highly regarded and eager to undertake the necessary education to become certified as a city clerk. When the topic came up at the June 2 regular council meeting, it was already clear how the vote would go.

MADEIRA BEACH — The city’s fitness center — originally created for the firefighters — again will be opened to residents on a trial basis, as city officials try to gauge residents’ level of interest. Some 190 residents obtained pass cards last year, when the city initiated a trial period to allow residents to use the facility along with the firefighters. But after the hurricanes hit in October, the resident access was cut off.
