Photo by Thomas Doolin/SportsfileThe Fairyhouse Easter meeting, which culminates in the Irish Grand National on Monday, kicks off today, and there are a few that stand out as decent betting opportunities. I won’t pretend to be an expert on ancient Greece, but I read somewhere that the phrase “leave no stone unturned” comes from a legend involving the Oracle of Delphi. She supposedly advised a general named Polycrates to search under every stone for treasure left by a defeated enemy – advice that came to symbolise thoroughness. There are some horse races where we’ve got very little to go on when studying the form, but in veteran handicap chases there’s no excuse for cutting corners.

If you’re old enough to remember the resignation of US president Richard Nixon, ABBA flying high in the charts with Waterloo, and transport strikes across Ireland, you might also remember Red Rum winning the Grand National. That was in 1974 – the second of Red Rum’s record three victories in the great steeplechase, the last of which came in 1977. Trained by Ginger McCain, Red Rum’s 1974 victory was also the last time a horse carried the maximum weight to victory, a full 12 stone on the day.

One win bet and two each-way for me in the Grand National. Best of luck with whatever you're doing yourself. Today's @IndoSport column: https://t.co/J1ZlU5pAzI

Just looking through the Cheltenham betting stats, it wasn't quite a punters' massacre with clear favs actually showing a small profit if blindly backed. Willie Mullins-trained clear favs had a strike-rate of exactly 50%, for the fourth year running!

The @IndoSport NAP Dinoblue won at 2.68 on Betfair, (6/4 SP) but the last race 😞 Act Of Authority, 2nd each-way at 28/1. Nice place money - but I feel a bit deflated. What a mad festival, with lots of odds-on shots turned over. As Miley from Glenroe would say, Well holy God!
