The former chairman of the nation’s prudential regulator, Wayne Byres, has been appointed to the ASX board as the market operator faces a range of governance questions after its failure to replace ageing but crucial infrastructure. It’s the second major appointment since Mr Byres left the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority in October 2022 after eight years as chairman; in January, he joined Macquarie’s banking subsidiary as a director.

Mr Byres left APRA in October 2022 after eight years as chairman. His successor, John Lonsdale, oversaw the regulatory work against Macquarie. Sources at Macquarie said Mr Byres had not been brought on to fix the APRA issues, which are for management and close to resolution. Rather, it was his deep international connections that were attractive to help navigate relationships with regulators around the world.
