What if our efforts to improve animal welfare have backfired? That is the question posed by the latest open rescue by Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) at a Certified Humane supplier of goat milk to Whole Foods, Vera Dairy in Stratford, California. The rescue, which found dead baby goats illegally piled up by the dozens at the farm, revealed disturbing gaps in accountability to the industry’s own welfare standards.

I spoke to Kirsty Henderson today, the President of Anima International in Europe. And I was struck by the general nature of her organization’s mission. They do not have any particular campaign or strategy. Rather, they focus on building a strong culture, grounded in radical candor, and a general organizational infrastructure that allows talent and intelligence to adapt to new circumstances. This reminded me of something called The Bitter Lesson.

In 2016, I walked into a cage-free egg farm and accomplished what was, at the time, my greatest success as an activist. I was leading an investigative team with Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), and we documented tens of thousands of birds crammed in industrial sheds, covered in feces, and (in some cases) literally being eaten alive.

I have had 6 figure verdicts after a judge forgot to give me a trial; unconstitutional orders gagging me from speech; and so many violent encounters with the state that I can no longer count. @DavidAFrench's op ed is a clarion call: We need change. https://t.co/86gt9ec4gY

The #1 story at Vox right now is about the poultry giant that funds Trump. Do YOU know what you're paying for when you buy chicken at the grocery store? https://t.co/TUbMjjS15S
