What if our efforts to improve animal welfare have backfired? That is the question posed by the latest open rescue by Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) at a Certified Humane supplier of goat milk to Whole Foods, Vera Dairy in Stratford, California. The rescue, which found dead baby goats illegally piled up by the dozens at the farm, revealed disturbing gaps in accountability to the industry’s own welfare standards.

I spoke to Kirsty Henderson today, the President of Anima International in Europe. And I was struck by the general nature of her organization’s mission. They do not have any particular campaign or strategy. Rather, they focus on building a strong culture, grounded in radical candor, and a general organizational infrastructure that allows talent and intelligence to adapt to new circumstances. This reminded me of something called The Bitter Lesson.

I just arrived at the Animals and Vegan Advocacy Summit in LA, and I thought I’d share some of the key issues facing the animal rights movement right now. I’m hoping we can try to brainstorm and find solutions to these challenges at the summit. The Future of Alternative Meats. There has been a cataclysmic decline in sales for most alt-meat products. Beyond Meat is on the brink of collapse, with its products being pulled from stores across the nation. And Impossible isn’t doing much better.

In 2016, I walked into a cage-free egg farm and accomplished what was, at the time, my greatest success as an activist. I was leading an investigative team with Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), and we documented tens of thousands of birds crammed in industrial sheds, covered in feces, and (in some cases) literally being eaten alive.
