Of the dozen boats signed up for the run, two boat owners dropped out because of a funeral and others begged off because of mechanical or other troubles.

The longtime Toronto resident was going to take her camping vacation in Michigan last summer, but at the last minute she realized she didn't have a passport. She took an Ontario map to bed with her that night and spotted Charleston Lake, north of Gananoque. “It looked pretty, with lots of islands and a provincial park nearby,” said McLaughlin.
