1 INTRODUCTION Biomass allocation to different organs or components of plant individuals varies with environmental change (Litton et al., 2007; McConnaughay & Coleman, 1999; Poorter et al., 2012). The biomass fraction of different plant components reflects functional strategy in resource acquisition and, therefore, determines terrestrial carbon storage (Freschet et al., 2018; Umana et al., 2021).

1 INTRODUCTION The dimensions of rooting systems, indicated by root depth and lateral extent, represent the amount of soil space occupied, which determines the uptake of resources by fine roots (diameter < 2 mm) (Freschet et al., 2021; Schenk & Jackson, 2002; Zhou et al., 2020). Adjustment of root distribution in soil profiles is crucial for plant resource acquisition and can thus affect plant resilience to environmental stress (Fan et al., 2017; Zhou et al., 2020).
